Tagalog Glossary
700+ Words
Tagalog-English/English-Tagalog

Well, as you know, I strongly encourage everyone who visits my site to get a Tagalog dictionary if you're planning a relationship with a Filipina.  For one thing, it's just common sense that if you're going to start a relationship by writing someone, you should probably know a few words of that person's language.  For another, I sell them, and, quite frankly,  I want you to buy one from me.

However, I realize that some of you need a little help immediately, or just can't commit to purchasing a dictionary right now.  So I pulled out a few books from my shelves (you'd be surprised out how many Tagalog books a former linguist with a Filipina wife collects over the years...) and painstakingly typed up this little glossary for you.  At 700 words, I figured I had done my duty, so if you need any more words, get a dictionary ($6, shipped, click HERE!).

By the way, the verbs are all listed in their root form, without all the possible variations.  As an example, "alis" means "go."  But alis may take the following forms:  umalis, umaalis, aalis, kaalis, makalis, etc.  In Tagalog, the root (or infinitive) is typically hidden inside a collection of affixes.

Mag- (-Nag) or Um- (example: Umalis), -In, -An, Ipang-. I-, Ipag-, Pag-, Ika- are some you'll come across.  Unless you plan on becoming a Tagalog grammarian, you don't need to understand how all these forms are used.  But you should be able  pull the key "root" verb from it's modified form so that you'll have a basic idea what's being said.  Keep in mind that Mag- and Nag- are in front of a verb, while Um- is typically inserted following the first letter of the verb.  Magsulat is a form of sulat, "to write."  So is sumulat (notice how "um" was placed after the S - sumulat).

I realize that many of you Tagalog speakers out there are cringing now because of these generalities, but keep in mind I'm just trying to give non-Tagalog speakers a basic method of identifying verbs, I'm not trying to give a grammar lesson.  I'm sorry that I don't have room for a longer discourse.  Maybe at some future point.  But do contact me if you find a mistake.  After about my 300th word, my fingers were less than cooperative in typing what I told them to.

Finally, not all Filipinos are Tagalog speakers, and many of those who do know Tagalog are not native speakers (my wife included).  But it's extremely likely that anyone seeking a relationship with a Filipina will, more likely sooner than later, need to understand a few key words of that language.  It serves as a default national language, and according to my polls, almost half of all visitors to this site have wives or fiancees from Tagalog speaking regions.  Perhaps at some point I will be able to add a Cebuano/Visayan glossary, also, and others.  But for now, this is what I've got.

Remember, I can get you a dictionary for $6, shipped, if you'd like a more thorough reference (Click HERE).  Okay, enough plugs for my dictionary, here's the glossary:
